University of Applied Sciences Ulm does research at Zwick’s application lab

Stefan Klar from the University of Applied Sciences in Ulm is performing tests on different composite materials for his student research project in the application lab of Zwick.

One main focus is the direct measurment of the strain using applied strain gages on both sides of the samples. With this technique it is very easy to see parasitc bending forces. The easy and direct connection of different types of strain gages (120 or 350 Ohm) to our testControl II systems gives Stefan full synchronized data of his materials.

Opening of the UKM-Zwick Advanced Materials Research and Testing Laboratory in Malaysia

On April the 26th the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National University of Malaysia UKM and Zwick took place.

After the signing with HE Dr. Günther Gruber (second from left)

In the presence of HE Dr. Günther Gruber, the German Ambassador to Malaysia we signed the MoU to document and tighten a long-lasting relationship between UKM and Zwick.

After the signing of the MoU our Ambassador was officially conducting the opening ceremony of the UKM-Zwick Advanced Materials Research and Testing Laboratory.

Dr. Zainuddin Sajuri from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at UKM were introducing the machines and applications to the Ambassador.

With this facility UKM will be able to concentrate their research and education and also offer testing service to the industry.

Submission to the Zwick Science Award 2012 is now open

After receiving 66 submissions from 19 countries for the Zwick Scinece Award 2011 the submission for 2012 Award is now officially opened.

Young scientists with scientific publications about materials research are welcome to send their paper to robert.strehle@zwick.com

Pictures, videos and any additional material about the related topic are also appreciated.

We have again a prize money of 8.000 Euro to distribute, an invitation to our next Academia Day and interesting talks on our Academia Day 2013.

Happy winners of the Zwick Science Award in Munich

We had a really successful event at the TU München and 3 happy winners of the Zwick Science Award 2011.

Each winner had the chance to present his paper during our 3rd Zwick Academia Day.

Jan-Henning Dirks from the Trinity College gave an overwhelming presentation about the engineering skills of insects by showing his investigations of the fracture toughness off locust cuticle.

Mr. Nagayasu demonstrated a really innovative apparatus for biaxial testing in a normal universal testing machine. During the discussion with the audience he already found interested parties to get such a tool for their research.

Last but not least Christabel Evans from the Imperial College demonstrated her findings of the effect of the deformation mechanisms on the high temperature plasticity of Zicaloy-4. Besides the modeling she also presented data using x-ray diffraction measurements taken at the synchrotron Diamond Light Source which is located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.

After the successful event in Munich we are now looking forward for next Academia Day, which most probably will take place at the Manchester University early 2013.

Visit at Xi’an University of Technology

Last week I had the chance to visit Xi’an University of Technology.

With some Professors and scientists we discussed the Zwick Science Award and some news about extensometry. We had a very interesting workshop about non-contacting extensometers. I used my mobile laserXtens to measure the elongation during a room temperature multi-step creep test.

Announcement of the 2011 Zwick Science Award Winners

We are pleased to announce the winners with the support of our international jury:

  1. Dr. Jan-Henning Dirks from the Trinity College, Dublin Ireland
    “Fracture toughness of locust cuticle”
  2. T. Nagayasu from Nihon University, Narashino-shi, Chiba Japan
“Improvement of compact biaxial tensile testing apparatus using conventional tensile testing machine and evaluation of the test results”
  3. Christabel Evans from Imperial College, London UK
“The effect of deformation mechanisms on the high temperature plasticity of Zircaloy-4”

We are looking forward for our event on the 14th of March at the TU Munich where the winners will receive their awards.

The first prize of Dr Jan-Henning Dirks will also receive the Paul Roell Medal from our CEO Dr. Jan Stefan Roell.

Please register yourself for this event to support these young scientists and give them an appropriate audience.

We still have a limited amount of vacancies for a guided tour in the research reactor FRM II in Garching as part of the event.
